Performance of the week (POTW) 11/10-11/16

Have I mentioned my love for three yards and a cloud of dust? Okay so that saying has become outdated with all the turf fields showing up in the NFL. Still, I love smash-mouth football. Especially when the Giants do the smashing.

Give my POTW to the offensive line of the New York Giants: Shaun O’Hara, Rich Seubert, Chris Snee, Kareem McKenzie, and David Diehl.

Yeah – the Baltimore Ravens haven’t surrendered 200 yards on the ground to an opponent in this century. Ooops! That is until today. Ray Lewis and his band of hit men entered today’s game holding opponents to a league-leading 65 yards on the ground. The O-Line opened the holes and Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw were off and running.

Who gets your POTW?

  1. I am going with the Virginia Military men’s basketball team for knocking off the Kentucky Wildcats 111-103.

First off, I never knew there was a college called Virginia Military, which is probably actually why Bily Gillipsie scheduled the game. Should have been a warm up and an early cupcake.

The best part??? Wait…… Wait.. They beat them in Rupp Arena!! Fantastic stuff.

  2. I can’t imagine that the talk around the barber shops in Lexington are favorable for Gillespie.

  3. The talk can’t be good.. Norman Dale had less time Hickory High School and he was on the hot seat.

  4. Do you think Gillespie has a Jimmy Chittwood ready to step in and tickle the twine?

  5. He better or he will be enjoying the view with Ashley Judd..

  6. I nominate the Chugiak H.S. volleyball team for reaching the State Championship match on Saturday, only to lose to the favored Dimond H.S. squad in 5 grueling games, the last of which had to be played for 10 extra points so somebody would win by two. CHS actually had 4 chances at match point, but couldn’t close the deal. (Talk about heart-breaking).

If i were totally unbiased, I’d be nominating DHS for POTW, but my daughter plays for CHS. She’s only a junior … maybe they’ll win it all next year.

  7. Great job Emily!!!!

  8. Going with Dwight Howard from the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Earlier this week had 30 points, 19 rebounds, 10 blocks (I forget the opponent). Crazy stat if he could have gotten one more board 30-20-10. Not too many guys who have completed that feat in their career.

Good story about VMI beating Kentucky. I coached a player (well, somewhat. I’m the assistant) a few years ago who was a pretty good shooting guard. He had plenty of offers to smaller DI and plenty of DII colleges. The most officious offer came from VMI. He was also offered by DII Barton College. He turned both down because neither was big enough for him. VMI claims a national upset this season. And in case you’ve forgotten, Barton College won the DII national championship in dramatic fashion a two years ago. Great kid but his aspirations were so lofty he never thought of the opportunities he could be missing out on at these small time schools.

  9. Rey, where did the kid end up going?

I second the nomination of the Giants’ offensive line, of course.

  10. Oh – sorry. He went to a prep school for two years and now doesn’t go anywhere. He’s waiting for a big time offer.

  11. So he’s kinda like a TP ditty. :)

  12. How about this for performance of the week?

“Eri Yoshida, a 16-year-old schoolgirl…is bidding to become the first female pro baseball player in Japan…Yoshida threw a hitless inning in a tryout and was one of 33 players taken in the draft. She stands five feet tall and weighs 114 pounds.”

  13. Wally – Congrats to Emily..

Chas – Giants Offensive line? I believe last week, you used the word Homer with me? :-)

I do second Eri Yoshida.. Fantastic story.

  14. Yeah, but I added the “of course” as something of an acknowledgment that it was in support of my team. Besides, the Giants O-Line allowed their team to rush for more than 3 times as many yards as their opponent was allowing on average. You nominated Matt Cassel for showing steady improvement, as if he’s a fourth-grader who’s raised his grade from a C to a B.

  15. Well if he raised his grade from a C to a B, then he turned it into an A on Thursday.. Since you brought him up, he should be right in the discussion for Performance of the Week. The only thing that was in his way of a victory was Brett Farve.

  16. You’re right. In fact, he elevated his play to the level of Tom Brady in that game, losing by a field goal to a team from New York. ;)

  17. Helmet Sticker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
